Aurora PhotoCenter Opens Gallery + Workspace
Aurora PhotoCenter is thrilled to announce the opening of its new gallery and workspace at Circle City Industrial Complex in the Windsor Park neighborhood of Indianapolis. The new facility will be the home for Aurora’s exhibitions, workshops, artist talks, and other programming; the space will also offer access to creative tools for photographers with a black-and-white darkroom and digital imaging area.
“We are very excited to better serve the photographic artists in our community, especially with the addition of the darkroom and digital imaging area for creating work, and to become part of this amazing family of artists, organizations, and businesses at CCIC,” said Aurora cofounder and director Mary Goodwin.
Aurora will offer a first look of the new facility during October First Friday, October 6, 2023, from 6-9pm, when visitors can enjoy a re-installation of the exhibition, Fulcra, featuring the work of 22 Central Indiana photographers, as well as preview the spaces that will become Aurora’s darkroom and digital area. Through the end of 2023, the space will also be open for First Fridays in November and December, and by appointment, while the darkroom and digital areas are completed. Aurora plans a grand opening for early 2024, with both the darkroom and digital imaging area fully equipped and ready to rent by the hour, as well as two new exhibitions featuring the work of Eli Craven and Tsar Fedorsky. Starting 2024, regular business hours at the gallery + workspace will be Thursday-Sunday, 10am-6pm, and by appointment.
Plans for the darkroom include space for black-and-white film and print development, with the ability to print up to 20 x 24-inch silver gelatin prints. All basic equipment and chemistry will be included in the hourly rental price; users will supply their own film and paper. The digital imaging area will start with a workstation suitable for scanning, image editing, and archival inkjet printing up to 17 x 22 inches, with larger format printers to come. Both the darkroom and digital area tools will be rentable by the hour after joining as a member. Aurora will offer scholarships and redistributive pricing to expand accessibility to these creative tools.
In its new facility, Aurora will continue and grow its exhibition and residency programs, as well as offer more frequent and specialized workshops and artist talks. Aurora will also continue to collaborate with long-standing partners, including Tube Factory Artspace and Herron School of Art + Design, plus form new creative and strategic partnerships.
