The 22 artists selected for the exhibition Fulcra: Transformational Moments in Photographic Practice responded to the question: What was one moment — a risk, chance discovery, meeting, experiment, or accident — that shifted your photographic practice in an important way? The exhibition combines text and image to offer insight into the nature of artistic inspiration and the factors that motivate and sustain long-term practice.
Participating artists are Lesley Ackman, Amber Collins, Andrew Granstaff, Ashley Henke, Peter Hiatt, Jason Jones, Maresa Kelly, Lita López, Arindam Majumdar, n/a, Christopher Newell, Jessica Paullus, Sarah Pfohl, Victoria J. Ridgway, Destini Ross, Dallas Sanford, Jay van Santen, Anna Schink, Eric Schoch, Betsy Stirratt, Erin Harper Vernon, and Charles Yang.
Fulcra was juried by Mary Goodwin of Aurora and by guest juror, Julian Jamaal Jones, who has an MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he received the prestigious Museum Purchase Award from Cranbrook Art Museum. Julian Jamaal Jones merges a range of mediums, including photography, drawing, sculpture, and textile, to express his perspectives around Black identity and memorialize Black culture. Jones teaches photography and textiles at Herron School of Art + Design.
