Aurora PhotoCenter seeks candidates for the inaugural Lamar Richcreek Memorial Fall Internship. Lamar Richcreek was a fine art photographer and an instructor of photography and lab manager at Herron School of Art and Design on the IUPUI campus for 20 years. This endowed internship recognizes Richcreek’s lifelong commitment to learning, an appreciation for people of all types and cultures, the power of the arts, and the importance of integrity and respect for all.
Aurora PhotoCenter is an Indianapolis-based nonprofit that supports visual artists working in photography through a full program of exhibitions, residencies, workshops, artist talks, and access to creative tools.
We seek an intern to work with Founding Director Mary Goodwin in the gallery + workspace environment. For the Lamar Richcreek Memorial Fall Internship, from September 2-December 20, 2024, priority consideration will be given to applicants currently enrolled in coursework in the fine arts or arts administration at an accredited college or university who hope to teach photography and studio arts in their future careers. Strong interest in and knowledge of analog and digital photography, exhibitions, workshops, and events a plus.
The Intern must be reliable and capable of working independently. The intern will be required to dedicate approximately 10 hours per week for the duration of the internship and will be responsible for tracking their activities and hours. A stipend of $2,000 will be paid to the intern, $1,000 due after the first half of the internship and the second half of the stipend upon the internship’s completion.
We can tailor the internship to the intern’s interest and needs. Some core projects for Aurora’s Fall Intern could include:
* Tutor new members on film development and printing in the darkroom
* Develop a workshop concept and curriculum
* Install and deinstall of Aurora’s Fall exhibitions
* Assist at openings and events, including workshops
* Document exhibitions, openings, workshops, artist visits, and special events
* Produce marketing and promotional interviews and other videos
* Gallery/workspace sitting and attending
* General cleaning (once per month and as needed)
* Darkroom chemistry and equipment maintenance
* Assist visiting artists and residents
* Catalog donations
We also ask that the intern undertake one long-term project to be completed over the course of the internship. We will work with the intern to identify and plan this project. Examples of past long-term projects include:
* Creating a searchable online database for the photobook library
* Building a spent-silver filter for the black-and-white darkroom
* Creating a social media calendar for Aurora
* Resetting all gallery lights to consistent color temperature
