Keliy Anderson Staley
2019 Aurora Project Residency

In June 2019, artist Keliy Anderson-Staley set up a temporary tintype studio and darkroom at partner space Tube Factory, where she made tintype portraits of over 60 Indianapolis residents from every corner of the city. Anderson-Staley made each sitter a collaborator by talking them through the history of the process, selecting a pose for the portrait, and showing them show the emulsion is poured and the final tintype developed.

On June 15, Anderson-Staley led a workshop about the tintype process, which allowed the workshop participants to get hands-on with making their own tintypes.

Images made during the June tintype sessions were included in the exhibition, [hyphen] American, in July 2019.

Anderson-Staley’s tintype sessions and exhibition were Aurora’s first programming and served to introduce our arts community to Aurora’s mission and our belief in the power of photography to enrich lives through collaborative creativity.

The Aurora Project Residency would not be possible without the following partnership. Aurora PhotoCenter thanks Tube Factory Artspace for its generous support of this residency.
