The Aurora PhotoCenter residency offers focused time for intensive photographic research and production.
Aurora provides workspace, an artist stipend, a place to stay, and other support for residents. The length of the residency is flexible from 2 to 4 weeks, with the artist stipend scaled to length of stay.
The Aurora residency originated in June 2019, when Keliy Anderson-Staley constructed a tintype studio at Tube Factory Artspace. Over the course of four days, the artist created tintype portraits of close to 100 Indiana residents, including her subjects in the process of taking and developing the images. The portraits from these sessions were included in the exhibition, [hyphen] American, which took place at Tube in July 2019. The artist also taught a workshop about tintypes during her stay. Anderson-Staley’s time in Indianapolis left a rich and lasting record of our residents, and also of the creative potential to be found here.
Expanding on that success, Aurora invited Tarrah Krajnak for a two-week residency in 2021. Krajnak plans to dedicate her time to work on her series Master Rituals II: Edward Weston’s Nudes, with time spent both in the darkroom and studio. The artist will give a virtual talk about her work, and about the power of residencies, in Fall 2021. Aurora partnered with Herron School of Art + Design for this residency.
Aurora PhotoCenter will announce an application process for the residency in 2022.
